Shatto Gallery is pleased to present WAVEFORM, a curation by CultureHub LA, as the first installment in a series of group exhibitions presenting Los Angeles artists exploring innovative storytelling through emerging technology. Works investigate the interaction and translation between sound frequencies and light wavelengths, and propose new forms of agency in non-physical environments and in relation to intangible elements.

Laura Sofía Pérez and Chris Ryan Williams present I Ain’t Got No Spare, a performative and interactive installation exploring themes of the Black experience and the ephemerality of Black agency, using Los Angeles as a case study. With sound artist Davy Sumner, Choreographer Shauna Davis, and Video Programmer Martín Vélez.
Josephine Wang presents Spectrum, a multimedia installation converging sound and light in a performative environment, live-animating visible light spectrum with a wall of 800 LEDs through an algorithmic translation of audible sound frequencies. With Composer and Performer Tim Johnson.
Lisa Müller-Trede presents collider getting sick, a short virtual situation investigating impact as motoric guidance, as the body oozes in between.
Laura Sofía Pérez presents Grew Out the Concrete, a video installation that captures the afternoon lights and shadows cast on the sidewalks of City Terrace, Los Angeles through a slow-motion journey.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Laura Sofía Pérez (b. 1989, San Juan, Puerto Rico) is a multidisciplinary artist who works in the realms of video, installation, and sound. She received her MFA in Film/Video from California Institute of the Arts and her BFA in Fine Arts from Parsons: The New School for Design. Her work has been screened and exhibited in San Juan, New York, Los Angeles, Miami, and Buenos Aires. Exhibitions include "No Limits Within," California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles, CA (2017), "Homeless," Miami, FL (2017), "Without a Song," Fundación ACE, Buenos Aires, Argentina (2014), and "WIMMIN," Glasshouse, Brooklyn, NY (2013). She was a SUB30 artist in residence at Fundación ACE, Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2014 and, this year, she is a resident of La Práctica at Beta-Local, San Juan, Puerto Rico. She has worked on video projections for theatrical and musical productions by director Natalia Lassalle-Morillo and composers Chris Ryan Williams and Samora Pinderhughes. She has designed sound for various award winning animated shorts by her CalArts colleagues, including "Las del diente" by Ana Pérez López, which screened this year in SXSW and ArcLight Hollywood as Slamdance Film Festival Official Selection. Her installations often speak on ideas of deterritorialization and the air of melancholy that arises from displacement.
Chris Ryan Williams is a performer, composer, improviser, trumpeter, and educator quickly finding himself in circles alongside LA’s finest contemporary improvisers and experimentalists. Concerned with building community across disciplines his live performances involve immersive music and multimedia aesthetics. Performing and recording with a wide array musical luminaries from Bennie Maupin to Eyvind Kang to Solange, Williams has proven a strong communicator in various settings. His most recent work Mehahn, a performative installation created in collaboration with director Natalia Lassalle-Morillo; is exploring the effects of hereditary dissension and draws upon works from playwright Gertrude Stein and improviser Bill Dixon. In the past year, Williams has had premieres of compositions at the Blue Whale, Zebulon, and Clockshop. Williams was invited to the 2018 summer residency in Jazz and Creative Music at BANFF Centre for the Arts where he mentored, performed, and recorded with Vijay Iyer, Graham Haynes, and Morgan Guerin among others. This year, Williams was an Associate Resident at the Atlantic Center for Arts residency in Florida, working with acclaimed composer/flautist Nicole Mitchell. He also participated in The Creative Gesture, an artist residency hosted at BANFF Centre for the Arts, geared towards collective composition between composers and choreographers.
Josephine Pu-Sheng Wang is a Los Angeles-based Taiwanese lighting designer/artist. She’s collaborated with theater directors Jessica Hannah, Larry Biederman, Jack Stehlin, Matthew Leavitt; artists James Franco, Edgar Arceneaux, Andrew Schneider; choreographer Heidi Duckler, composer/producer Ajay Kapur, Madeline Falcone. Presented artwork in Cuba and designed at Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Her interactive lighting project SPECTRUM won LIT Lighting Design Awards 2018. Josephine develops unconventional design techniques for performances, installations and everything in between, embraces possibilities of new technology used in multimedia designs, dedicates to arts bridging gaps between classes and races, speaking social justice and human rights. She has a BS in Computer Science from NCU, Taiwan, and a BFA in Theatre Lighting Design from CalArts.
Lisa Müller-Trede is a performance artist new media- and filmmaker, interested in the performative dimension of virtuality and the virtual in the live event. Her work focuses on the body in its live, recorded and augmented state. Often combining various media in live film shootings or performative exhibitions she explores the body's physical limits. This is a core catalyst for her engagement with the body, the camera, the means of the editing room and devices and software allowing for augmented reality. She performed and exhibited works at the Venice Biennale and at Tanz im August Berlin, the Independent Art Fair New York, at the Downey Mansion in Chicago, at the Frieze London, the Performing Arts Festival Berlin, at the Kunstverein Hamburg and the Bundeskunsthalle Bonn, Uferstudios Berlin. Currently Lisa is working on her PhD in Media Arts and Practice at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
