Shatto Gallery, in collaboration with Gallery H, is pleased to present The Moon Jar Reimagined, a group exhibition bringing together six Korean artists: Chung Sook Sohn, Hajeong Rogers, Insook Park, Joongsik Kim, Manchul Oh, and Yejin Shin. Each artist offers a distinct interpretation of the moon jar, moving fluidly between East and West, tradition and contemporary practice. Based across the United States, Korea, and Europe, the six bring together a range of perspectives shaped by different places, generations, and ways of working, united by a shared return to this singular form.

The white porcelain moon jar (dalhangari) stands as one of the most refined expressions of Korean aesthetics and sensibility. Its name derives from its luminous white surface and its full, rounded form, reminiscent of the moon. Characterized by a gently flared rim and a soft, harmonious silhouette, the moon jar is traditionally formed by joining two separately thrown halves, an upper body and a lower one, due to its scale. Some achieve near-perfect symmetry, while others retain subtle irregularities shaped by the potter's hand. This quiet asymmetry and organic fullness have given the moon jar its enduring appeal. As the French scholar and cultural critic Guy Sorman once observed, the moon jar represents "an aesthetic and technological achievement found in no other civilization. If I were to choose a symbol of Korea, it would be the moon jar."
